Leo Carrillo (North) 12-30-07 : Angelique, Andy, Josh and I dove Leo Carrillo on Sunday Dec 30th. Nice dive site - just off the far end of the "north" parking lot... Small to moderate size waves, but nicely spaced. Decent viz - 15 feet +/- 5 feet. Lots of beautiful kelp and beautiful reef to explore! A bit surgy so it was difficult to photograph the critters, but WOW is there a lot to see there! Five species of nudies, several species of tunicates, sponges, worms, horn sharks, thornback ray, a FAT harbor seal that spooked Angelique (no pic), lobsters, Garibaldi, senoritas, perch, sheephead, COLD foot-numbing 53 degrees on both dives (diving wet while drysuit is at DUI getting work done).

Entered straight out from the stairs near the restrooms then went a little north. 67 feet, 67 minutes, 55 degrees. Highlight was the huge Lewis's Moon Snail, walking octopus and Hemphill's Kelp Crab. Lots of Bay Pipefish around.

Redondo Beach - Veteran's Park - 10-09-07 pm : Scott Geitler and I had a great night dive at Redondo Beach - Veteran's Park. We had been concerned about the winds messing up the conditions but it turned out to be a great dive. 69 minutes, 69 ft max depth. The wind waves were 1-3 feet but nicely spaced, very little surge in the shallows, no surge at depth. 15-25 ft visibility. Water was cold at depth - 51 degrees(!), but warmer (low 60's) in the shallows... I got pretty cold in my wetsuit (can't wait for my drysuit to come back from repair!). We found so many nudibranchs in one small area. I had fun spotting them while Scott could take some amazing photos with his DSLR camera. Another highlight was this pretty little shrimp in the algae salad. Also saw the smallest baby Guitarfish I've ever seen. Four others (Angelique, Josh R, Lee Z, and Walt C) also dove last night and they were lucky to see an electric ray and an egg jellyfish. We all had great dives!

Laguna Beach - Deadman's Reef - 10-06-07 - Sole Searchers Dive Club : Joined Anastasia and five of her dive club Sole Searchers for a dive in beautiful Laguna Beach at Deadman's Reef. It was a great day for diving. Nice and sunny, smooth surface on the water, waves were 1-3 feet and nicely spaced. In the shallows, the water was clear like tropical water, and out around the reef the viz was 30 ft in many areas. Surge was pretty mild except for near the top of the reef, which is surprisingly in pretty shallow water - 15 feet - for such a long distance off shore. We were a little concerned because the day before the wind was blowing like crazy all over so cal, with white caps and long surf zones, etc., but the weather reports were accurate. The winds died way down - yay! After the dive we had lunch at Ruby's in South Laguna. Thank you Anastasia and the Sole Searchers for the fun day!

Redondo Beach - Veteran's Park - 10-04-07 pm : Met up with Mark, Jeremy, Josh, Scott and Angelique. Buddied with Angelique and Scott who was using his super camera. 1-2 ft surf, relatively warm water - upper 60s in the shallows, 57 at depth. Spent most of our time in the 70-90 ft range. Very nice visibility - 20ft+ in the shallows, a little surge in the shallows, none at depth. Dove wet since my drysuit is in service, but it was actually nice because the water wasn't too cold. Lots of critters. One of tonight's highlights couldn't be captured very well on camera. There was a school of small fish that was following us throughout the dive, feeding on the tiny shrimp that had gathered around our lights. They would sneak in towards you and grab the shrimp, sometimes touching you, and some even touched my face! Took a photo of salad in the salad bowl, and got some bonus nudis in the photo. :-)

Redondo Beach - Veteran's Park - Night Dive 09-26-07 : Had a fabulous night dive at Redondo-Vet's Park with Walt C. Entered from the steps between the bathrooms and the pier and went straight out. Flat surf, no surge or current, water was cold at depth (53 degrees), good 15-20 ft visibility. 68 minutes, 71 ft. Lots of critters in the detritis zone, especially nudibranchs, pipefish, skeleton shrimp and tiny baby octos. The near full moon was rising on the surface swim out. Very pleasant! Here are a few photos from the dive. :-)
